The recent legalization of recreational cannabis in New Jersey has made the state a hot spot for cannabis enthusiasts. Whether you are a lifetime resident of the Garden State or visiting from out of state, there’s plenty to explore in cannabis tourism. Here is a guide on what to do in New Jersey for cannabis lovers.
The growth of cannabis legalization and popularity has given owners of dispensaries, cultivation sites, and farmers a chance to offer people cannabis tours as a way to educate. Some of the education components include learning about the cultivation process, the science behind cannabis, and the differences in cannabis strains. Cannabis-friendly events and festivals are being introduced to the New Jersey scene. Some options include cannabis education seminars or live music events promoting cannabis. This offers people plenty of opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals while enjoying cannabis culture in a social setting.
Since legalizing adult use on January 1st, 2021, New Jersey has opened more than 100 dispensaries. The state is currently accepting Personal-Use (recreational) business applications for Cultivation, Manufacturer, Retailer and Laboratories.

What to do in New Jersey for cannabis lovers? CONSUMPTION LOUNGES.
The Commission’s proposed cannabis consumption area rules provide individuals 21 years and older with a place to safely enjoy cannabis and socialize. The proposed regulations are designed to have a positive social impact by promoting public safety and expanding access for people who cannot or don’t want to consume cannabis in their homes. On January 17, 2024, New Jersey’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) adopted new regulations allowing cannabis consumption areas, commonly called consumption lounges. The regulations present a unique opportunity only seen in a few other legal states, including California and Colorado, the flagship states of cannabis legalization. The lounges can be either indoor and structurally enclosed or in an exterior structure.
One “green spot” to visit is Atlantic City. Known for its boardwalk, beaches, high-rise hotels and entertainment, Atlantic City is home to numerous adult-use dispensaries and soon, the city’s first lounge at High Roller’s Dispensary. Located inside the Claridge Hotel at 120 S Indiana Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401, this will allow customers to purchase, relax and consume responsibility in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. The consumption lounge is expected to open soon upon approval from the Commission.
Cannabis consumption lounges originated in Amsterdam. Lounges quickly became popular. States like California, Nevada, and Colorado have implemented these lounges as part of the local lifestyle. Emerging destinations for cannabis tourism that have lounges are Uruguay and Thailand. Two nations who have recently lifted its cannabis laws. Canada is another hub for cannabis tourism. Since their full legalization of the drug in 2018, we have seen an increase in tourism.

The Future?
Expect to see hotels, BnB’s or other vacation rental properties that allow cannabis use on their premises. These places will have designated areas for consumption that people can go to for a quick smoke break.
Cannabis lovers of New Jersey can agree on two things that are perfect together: cannabis and nature. Expect to see a rise in outdoor activities that pair cannabis with the likes of hikes, biking trails, and scenic tours. Imagine a safe space to smoke outdoors where you have a view of a beautiful lake surrounded by trees. Sounds like an amazing experience or a simple getaway. This kind of experience tailors to the travelers who seek adventure, relaxation, and a deeper connection with mother nature. Places like this should encourage micro-dosing to encourage awareness and safety.
In the future I would love to see all inclusive resorts dedicated to cannabis lovers. Resorts can offer fireside meals, fried yoga, or stargazing sessions. The possibilities are endless.
As cannabis tourism continues to grow, we will see and increase in opportunities for people to experience new things. Whether people are curious about cannabis or are seasoned enthusiasts, it is always nice to have options for how to consume and experience cannabis. This evolving industry has something for everyone. It is important to remember that there are unspoken rules and laws to follow when being a cannabis tourist; follow the laws to travel responsibly, respect the locals, and do not be disrespectful, not just to the locals but to the cannabis industry.
Remember it’s about connection! To nature, to culture, and to ourselves. Wherever your travels take you, may they be high in experience, rich in discovery, and rooted in respect.
Safe Travels!
